SONY Bio Battery - Generates Electricity from Glucose

SONY Bio Battery - Generates Electricity from Glucose

Simply outstanding and simply environmental friendly~ Sony today announced the development of a bio battery that generates electricity from carbohydrates (sugar) utilizing enzymes as its catalyst, through the application of power generation principles found in living organisms.

Test cells of this bio battery have achieved power output of 50 mW, currently the world's highest level for passive-type bio batteries. The output of these test cells is sufficient to power music play back on a memory-type Walkman.

In order to realize the world's highest power output, Sony developed a system of breaking down sugar to generate electricity that involves efficiently immobilizing enzymes and the mediator (electronic conduction materials) while retaining the activity of the enzymes at the anode. Sony also developed a new cathode structure which efficiently supplies oxygen to the electrode while ensuring that the appropriate water content is maintained. Optimizing the electrolyte for these two technologies has enabled these power output levels to be reached.

Sugar is a naturally occurring energy source produced by plants through photosynthesis. It is therefore regenerative, and can be found in most areas of the earth, underlining the potential for sugar-based bio batteries as an ecologically-friendly energy device of the future.

Sony will continue its development of immobilization systems, electrode composition and other technologies in order to further enhance power output and durability, with the aim of realizing practical applications for these bio batteries in the future.

Just imagine what further research on this brilliant invention could power up other electrical appliances in the future, thus, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels that are continuously depleting.

Green Innovations & Inventions For A Greener Future

GREEN INNOVATIONS & INVENTIONS FOR A GREENER FUTURE

TOUCHPOT

Eco-friendly concept device harnesses kinetic energy. The Touchpot is an eco-friendly artificial plant pot that harnesses kinetic energy whenever its artificial leaves are moved by hand or by the wind. Designed by Aydan Design, the concept features leaves that can be rotated and moved in any direction. The leaves respond to human touch by harnessing the tiny amount of energy that will be generated during the process.

WRAPSTOVE

Little burners are formidable for camping, but they do org their minor-league points like refilling gas and flames extinguishing during talkative times. A fit discovery is using induction cooking stoves that are condensed. The WrapStove here follows that mean and comes tailor-made with little magnets in the sleeve, to stick onto the ark. It’s a tractable thang that is fashioned like a rolled up towel and wraps approximately the cooking pot. It switches-on not when the end tab is folded and the temperature is set via a touchscreen.

STER UV

The innovative STER UV water sterilization concept has been designed for fast, simple, compact and intuitive water purifying to ensure a clean and healthy kitchen environment. The concept comprises a thin and lightweight UV light stir stick along with an induction charger that purifies drinking water directly in a pitcher, glass or other water container quickly and easily. The induction charger doesn’t require replacement of batteries or contains no heat production or moving parts, making it an energy efficient and environment friendly tool with optimum effectiveness. The most suitable stir tool length has been determined as 20cm by testing it in different containers of up to 1.5 liter capacity and the conical shape of the tool gives effective visual clues, great grip comfort and semantics. The linear lamp technology of the stir tool was chosen for both the advantage of a tip reinforcement and maximum surface exposure.

GO!

Go’ by Rizki Tarisa is an all-in-one chair that has a desktop, lounge chair, workstation and an exercise machine all in one. Imagine sitting comfortably talking to your friends on MSN, sipping coffee and exercising at once—it’s multi-tasking to a whole new level, I tell you. It can even access the Internet! The only catch is that you have to bike for the energy.

ENVI

Envi, is a foresight urban dustbin, promoting composting from biodegradable waste. The project is based on a social approach. It shows the benefits that we can take from urban recycling. It makes waste into nutritious compost for the plant which it carries and lives in harmony with. The big part of the produced compost can be separated from Envi for usage in other occasions. This project uses bio-reactive substances based on photo catalysis to accelerate the degradation process of waste, remove bad smells and polluting gas. It is an indicator of human activities on our environment. If the people action is positive the plant grows up, if not it will disappear. Envi is eco-friendly in a coherent approach; attention was placed on the choice of the materials and their treatment.

SUNFLOWER

As flower follows the sun so sunflover monitor turns on its axis and collects light for power. When you’re away from home, activate the sun mode. With the help of four sensors located on a monitor and an integrated joint catches the sun’s rays.Solar panels on the front and transform energy stored in the generator. In situations where we have no electricity, we have the ability to run sunflover operating system.Sunflower monitor has an integrated hard drive that is compatible with your Operating system.Upon arrival, current sunflover automatically switches data with its integrated disk to your hard drive on your computerJust set your device to the holder of the monitor and with the help wirelles bluethoot connection you will be able to transfer your favorite music, view and transfer your pictures, surf the web etc

Aire Mask: convert your breathing into renewable electrical power

HUMAN WHEELS

Green wheels on a simulator, which converts the kinetic energy produced by the human body into electricity. Several machines are connected to a central storage unit of energy, where electricity can be supplemented with road lighting and traffic lights. Designer Nadim Inaty imagines that the device can be placed in public places, and allow users to donate a portion of its running time in exchange for a place to start. If you are in any case, why not?

SPROUT

Igor Lobanov’s ‘Sprout’ pen represents the possibility for truly unique design to emerge in areas that are characterized by relative homogeneity. The Russian product designer’s creation melds high design with function and purpose, such as having the long stalk encased within literally ’sprout’ as it fills with ink, changing color from yellow to a vibrant green as it grows full. This design not only intrigues the eye, but it also allows for a reconsideration of how we view this essential tool; normally hidden away, the central ‘core’ of ink is given the primary focus, and in being refillable, its environmental design theme is integrated into its function.

LUMINAID

The LuminAID lantern is designed to address dependence on kerosene lamps in the developing world and its extremely lightweight and easy to transport inflatable design is also targeted at use in disaster relief situations, plus it makes a very handy addition to your camping kit. LuminAID is fully charged after 4-6 hours in sunlight makes and is reportedly good for up to four hours of lighting at 35 lumens, or up to six hours at 20 lumens.

LASER LIGHT

So you can’t be a conductor of any musical symphony nor do you have any creativity in painting and art. Tough luck, but what if I gave you this magical wand, that allowed you to transform your ceiling into a magical landscape of color LEDs, that brighten up and dim at the flick of your wrist, wouldn’t you be the Mozart of lights? Draw The Lights makes you a capable light conductor! What I mean is that clusters of LEDs take command from this “light brush” in your hand, and sparkle to create mesmerizing ambient settings. If creativity gets the better of you, how about creating artwork with the lights? Fancy! Plus, it can save your usage on light appliances~

GREEN LUNGS

Scientific data demonstrates the deterioration of the air in buildings over the last 50 years. Chemical pollutants cause more and more health problems. Plants have the capacity to depollute the air and create oxygen. The idea is to design a modular green wall system where plants, water and light create an « interior lung » to enhance air quality and create a luminous positive effect on workers and users. The plants are carefully chosen for their detoxifying and aesthetic qualities, while the light is provided by ecoefficient LEDs.

CYCLUS

‘Cyclus’ is one of the solution for the power generating without further environmental impact within everyday circumstance. In nowadays, it is really hard to survive without any electrical devices where especially urbanised society. Obviously power supplying issue is one of the fundamental problem to sustain current life cycle, and it can’t be split to consider for further sophisticated user experience. in reality there are some kind of archetype which already exists in the current market, for instance solar panel. However these early type of solution also requires certain user effort (eg, finding a location where appropriate to generate power.). Additionally in the meantime the device generates power, user cant move the place.

Are You A Common One?

How Common Is Your Birthday?

A friend posted an interesting data table on my Facebook wall yesterday, which was my birthday. The data listed each day of the year with a ranking for how many babies were born on each date from 1973 to 1999. Some interesting trends are evident in the data. Apparently, people like to make babies around the winter holiday season because a large proportion of babies are born in September (ours is due Sept. 24, btw).
Sept. 16 was most common. Feb. 29* was least common (I wonder why?~) . This heatmap is an effort to visualize the trends, with darker shades representing more births:
